Unfortunately every silver lining has a cloud when it comes to course management, warm days and cool autumnal night’s means this is a high risk time for disease on the Greens and we need to be ever vigilant with both the preventative and curative measures we take.

Don't be mistaken, we are at risk for most of the year but at the moment, with the soil temperatures still relatively high and the cool nights leading to heavy dew on the grass sward this creates a perfect micro climate for the disease to thrive.

A lot of thought goes into our spraying programme, there are similarities to the medical world where bacteria becomes resistant to penicillin/anti-biotics, in that the disease ‘lurking’ within the green can become resistant to the chemicals used to control them.

We are embracing cutting edge practices in adopting a more “organic/natural” approach which involves complimenting the existing chemical practices with the use of plant & vegetable extracts such as garlic, cayenne, nettle, vinegar and lime which when combined we hope will prove to be effective and ‘greener’ over the long term.

Drainage is also a firm focus and the process of clearing ditches & drains has begun and continues in earnest, we will also be verti-draining the greens which is similar to hollow tining although the holes themselves are bigger (12mm) and deeper (9”) but spaced further apart so there are less of them.

This should ease water through and away from the Greens much more quickly during wet periods providing more stable and healthier greens through the Winter.

We have raised the height of cut on Greens to 5mm, this will allow the grass plant to make the most of the sun during the short winter days throwing as much energy down into its roots as possible.

It is now very clear that the work we have done clearing vegetation from the more sheltered Greens is paying dividends with increased ventilation and sunlight and we will continue this ensuring we only remove trees where we consider it absolutely necessary and favouring raising the level of the canopy where that is a valid option.

So in conclusion this update has mainly focused on some of the practices that we employ to try and ensure that the Course remains playable for as much of the year as possible even following adverse weather conditions.

Or to quote Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, “In times of peace, prepare for war!”
Fri, 20 Nov 2015 11:05:11 +0000http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/11/20/autumn-course-blog/Express Golf Now Available!http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/08/22/express-golf-now-available/
EXPRESS GOLF AT HEVER CASTLE GOLF CLUB

We are pleased to announce we have introduced ‘Express Golf Course’ featuring oversized holes and a shorter course, perfect for those who are just starting out or looking for a quick, fun round of golf with friends.

Located alongside the Princes Course, the new 9 hole course plays over a shorter length of 769 yards and takes less than one hour to complete. Each hole is around three times the diameter of a regular hole making it easier to putt the ball.

The Express Course provides newcomers to the game with an early introduction to the golf course as opposed to just spending time on a driving range. It is hoped that the new course will attract a wide variety of potential golfers of mixed abilities by making the first step into golf more fun and less intimidating.

However, the course isn’t just for newcomers and even experienced golfers can enjoy the shorter course as it provides a nice option for those with a love of the game but very little time to play.

It was in the 1920s that golf first featured on the Hever estate when a private 9 hole course was built for the enjoyment of then owner, William Waldorf Astor. The original course survived until the Second World War when it was sadly abandoned during the war effort. The Championship Course was created in 1992 and the Princes 9 Hole Course opened in 1998.

The Express Golf Course costs only £5 per round and must be pre booked. Cost includes equipment hire.
Sat, 22 Aug 2015 10:43:00 +0100http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/08/22/express-golf-now-available/Course Improvementshttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/08/06/course-improvements/
Following a couple of recent tweaks to the 8th & is causing some of the approaches to have the appearance of being browned off, next week they will receive a wetting agent application with a liquid fertiliser which should ease the situation but some assistance from mother nature in the form of a good soaking would help us greatly.

We are essentially already in a semi-drought situation, anticipating this we have treated the fairways with a long lasting organic fertilizer which will help with drought stress and recovery, they are currently in great condition and we are considering raising the height of cut on the Fairway Mowers to prolong this and further protect against drought stress.

We are ‘maxed out’ in terms of how much water we can apply to the course in any 24 hour period and we of course have to prioritise the Greens & Tees which with the recent higher temperatures are starting to come on nicely.

Despite the plethora of tools available to the modern Greenkeeper, playing conditions remain largely dependent on the local climate and during dry periods the course will play firm and fast.
Thu, 25 Jun 2015 14:00:09 +0100http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/06/25/course-blog-june-2015/Edenbridge Hopital Fetehttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/06/25/edenbridge-hopital-fete/
Edenbridge Hospital Fete

During their Captaincy year Gerry Wood & Jo Harris supported Edenbridge Hospital raising substantial funds which were used to buy a range of medical equipment for the Day Room & Out-Patients unit.

At the end of their term, to their credit, Gerry & Jo kept up the relationship with the Hospital and run a chipping & putting stall at the bi-annual fete run by the hospital to raise funds.

The Pro-Shop provide the equipment and the Club put up a prize for the best score of the day.

Over £3,500 was raised this year in total and Gerry and his team have already been invited back for the next fete in June 2017.

Well done Gerry and his team!
Thu, 25 Jun 2015 13:58:52 +0100http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/06/25/edenbridge-hopital-fete/Captains Day 21st June 2015http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/06/25/captains-day-21st-june-2015/
Captains Day

Captains Day was held on Sunday 21st June and a good turn out of 73 golfers enjoyed warm sunny weather for much of the day with a stiff breeze.

The Course was playing at it's maximum length off the Blue Tees and unsurprisingly 36 points was enough to win both the Men's & Ladies Competitions.

Allan Chase taking the Men's Trophy (below) and Sandra Playford the Ladies.

(Full results are available on Intelligent Golf)

Many players commented on the excellent condition of the course which as usual offered a stern but fair test.

Congratulations to both winners on your deserved victories !!
Thu, 25 Jun 2015 13:31:43 +0100http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/06/25/captains-day-21st-june-2015/Easter Sunday Lunchhttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/03/17/easter-sunday-lunch/
Join us for Easter Lunch on Sunday 5th April.

FREE Easter Eggs for the kids!

Call: 01732 701010 to book your table
Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:00:00 +0000http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/03/17/easter-sunday-lunch/Course Updatehttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/course-update/
COURSE UPDATE – GREENS WORK

It is now two months since the outbreak of Fusarium Disease on the greens, which has been successfully treated.

After several thousand pounds worth of remedial action recovery has been positive and no further disease has been seen.

There is some way to go and there are still bare patches on a few greens. The worst of these are being plugged. This involves replacing the damaged turf with undamaged turf from the edge of the green. The damaged plugs will be seeded in the spring.

Grass growth is slow at the moment on the greens, but as soon as soil temperatures start rising we will be pushing growth on the greens as much as we can. We are confident that playing surfaces will be restored to their previous standards as early in the spring as possible. We also have new equipment and development plans ready for 2015 to further develop our greens, which will shortly be shared with the club membership at the upcoming AGM.

David Wood (Course Manager) and Rob Peers (Head Greenkeeper)
Fri, 09 Jan 2015 15:28:47 +0000http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/course-update/Annual Dinnerhttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/annual-dinner-d/
A quick update on the Annual Dinner.

We now have over 100 reservations and as such only a couple of tables remain available.

With the 10% discount expiring on Monday we would expect the remaining places to be reserved over the weekend so if you would like to attend please visit or call the bar on 01732 701010 to guarantee your place.

The price is £37.95 (-10% this weekend) and includes a Champagne & Canape Reception followed by a 3 Course Meal and a Disco.

For more information click here

We look forward to seeing you there!
Fri, 09 Jan 2015 15:28:10 +0000http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/annual-dinner-d/Mens AGMhttp://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/mens-agm-/
The Men's AGM is taking place on Tuesday 27th January.

All members are welcome to attend, no booking neccessary however our new Head Chef, Matthew McLoughlin will be preparing a meal so if you intend to eat we recommend reserving a meal at the bar.

See below for more details.

Men’s Agm

All Members, Gents & Ladies welcome to attend!

Tuesday 27th January 2015

Starts at 7.00pm

New Head Chef’s special
Only £6.95

Homemade Beef Stew with Creamy

Stilton Dumplings served with Rice
or

Homemade Chick Pea & Red Pepper

Tagine served with Rice

Food served from 6.00pm – 6.45pm

A limited number of portions will be available so to guarantee a meal you may reserve your meal in advance at the Club Bar
Fri, 09 Jan 2015 14:16:42 +0000http://hever.co.uk/news-information/2015/01/09/mens-agm-/
